Being a guest on a radio show or a podcast blog can be a great way to gain some exposure, especially if the show has a significant audience. Your next question is probably, “so where do I find these interview opportunities?”? We’re going to explain how to use free online resources to find shows looking for guests.. There are many free resources available online, so we’ll just start with a couple of them..
One of the best free resources I’ve found is RadioGuestList.com, which sends out email notifications and also posts updates to their feed.. This site acts as a platform for producers to request specific types of guests they are looking for to feature on their show, and RGL will email you whenever this happens..
To avoid sending a pitch to a producer who isn’t interested in you as a guest, always read the entire description of both the show and the type of guests they are looking for.. Basically, be sure that your writing somehow relates to the theme of the show.. The topic of your books or writing doesn’t have to match the topic of the show EXACTLY, but it should relate to it in some way.!
Each request includes a contact email address, which you will use once you find one that sounds like a potential match.. Before you start your email pitch, always explain that you found them on RadioGuestList.com, to give them an idea of what you want from them..
Continue by giving them a snapshot of who you are and what you do.. Mention any relevant experience you have in your field, and end the letter by relating your book to a current event if possible, and offer to share your point of view as an expert on whatever subject you are discussing. I suggest ending your email pitch with a thank you and your contact info..
If a producer replies and offers you a booking, respond quickly to set the date.. Producers don’t want to find themselves unprepared for a show they’ve been planning, so don’t wait to respond and give them the impression that you are not going to commit to your interview date..
If you do commit to a date for an interview, you should do everything you can to make sure that you are able to follow through with it on time. Everyone has things come up unexpectedly, but you need to inform the producer if you have to cancel your interview..
DO NOT try to conduct a phone interview using a cell phone, you must use a wired land line telephone.! The reason for this is the unreliability of cell phone reception and the effect it has on the audio quality of the interview.. Make sure you also take the call in a room or space that is quiet and without background noises or interruptions.
Thank them for having you on the show before you hang up.
Follow up with the contact person following the interview, and thank them again.
When you’re confirming your interview date with the producer, don’t forget to politely request an mp3 copy of the interview for your own website..
